This morning we sailed for awhile and arrived at Veere, where we started our cycling. It was cool, cloudy and windy so we weren’t feeling overly enthusiastic to get started! While we waited to get off the boat, our chef, Franco, did a little dance for us. He has a great sense of humour!
We had a very interesting day today as we travelled beside the North Sea over a series of islands in the province of Zeeland. We cycled over the full 15 km length of a storm surge barrier built by the Delta works. This huge dam connects the islands together and protects them against flooding from storms on the North Sea. We stopped on the dam to look at the gates and learn about this project. We cycled along a long, Sandy beach but no one was on the beach due to the cool weather. A little later the sun came out, which made for a very pleasant day.
After we crossed the 13 km dam we cycled to the beach to have a picnic.
Rikko and Roy braved the elements and went for a swim in the North Sea. Eugene walked in up to his knees.
When we left there we rode on a trail beside the sand dunes, it was a beautiful ride.
We rode through Burgh, an original village built in a ring for protection around the year 1000.
In 1953, before the Delta works dam was built, there was a devastating storm surge on the North Sea that flooded and wiped out several towns. We saw Koudekerke, the remains of the church tower of the village that got destroyed in a storm surge.
We rode into the charming seaside town of Zierikzee where we found the Quo Vadis waiting for us!
